3. Permits, Locates and the Work
We pull the sewer permit with the City of Boise or the city or sewer district that serves your property, call Dig Line 811 for locates, then do the work: a trenchless liner or pipe burst through small access pits, or an open trench where that is the better answer. The connection is inspected before it is covered.
4. Backfill, Compaction and Restoration

Should I repair my sewer line or replace it?
If the camera shows one localized break in an otherwise sound pipe, a spot repair or a short liner is usually the right call. If the pipe is old clay or Orangeburg with multiple root intrusions, bellies or cracks along the run, patching one spot just moves the problem to the next weak point. Is trenchless sewer repair possible for my house?
Often, yes. Pipe lining works when the existing pipe is still intact enough to hold a liner, and pipe bursting works when there is room to pull a new pipe through the path of the old one. Collapsed sections, severe bellies or badly offset joints sometimes rule trenchless out. The camera inspection answers the question before anyone digs. How long does a sewer line replacement take?
Most residential replacements in the Boise area take between one and five days. Trenchless jobs are often finished in a day or two. A full open-cut replacement typically runs two to five days including backfill, compaction and restoration, and longer if a street cut or a deep connection at the main is involved. Do I need a permit to repair a sewer line in Boise?
Yes, in nearly every case. The City of Boise, the surrounding cities and the sewer districts that serve unincorporated Ada and Canyon County all require a permit and inspection for sewer line repair or replacement, and work in the public right of way needs additional approval. Why do sewer lines fail so often in older Boise neighborhoods?
Older homes on the Bench, in the North End and in Garden City often still have clay, concrete or Orangeburg pipe from the era they were built.
