Drainage Systems Built for Boise & Idaho Soil

Usually one of three things: heavy clay soil that will not absorb water, a lot graded toward the house instead of away from it, or irrigation water. Much of the Treasure Valley sits on old irrigation ground with a high water table, and leaking ditches, sprinklers and neighbors' runoff all show up in the lowest spot, which may be your yard. Yes. Water that sits against the foundation soaks the soil, and in an Idaho winter that saturated soil freezes and expands, then thaws and settles. Over a few seasons that cycle cracks concrete, bows basement walls and lets moisture into the house. Grading and a foundation drain are far cheaper than a foundation repair. Both are gravel-filled trenches with perforated pipe, but they solve different problems. A French drain collects water that is already in the soil around a foundation or a low spot and carries it away. A curtain drain is placed uphill of the area you want to protect, across the slope, to intercept groundwater and surface water before it arrives. Sloped lots in Eagle and the foothills often need a curtain drain; flat lots usually need a French drain and regrading.

Small yard drains on your own property usually do not require a permit, but anything that discharges to a street, a storm drain, a ditch or an irrigation district lateral needs approval, and some cities require a permit for the excavation itself. Sending water onto a neighbor's property is not allowed. We identify the legal discharge point during the inspection and handle any approvals as part of the job.

It can, and on rural lots it often has to. A drain field that stays saturated from surface runoff or a high water table cannot treat wastewater, and it fails early. Regrading to shed water away from the field, a curtain drain uphill of it, and rerouting downspouts and irrigation are the usual fixes.
