How It Works / 04

What to Expect When Shamrock Installs or Repairs Your Septic System

Septic work in Idaho is regulated at the county health district level, and the steps below are built around that. Whether you need a new system for a build in Kuna or a failed drain field replaced near Caldwell, the process looks the same.

1. Call and Site Evaluation

Call (208) 919-4260 and we come look at the property. For a new system that means checking the lot, the well and setback distances, and coordinating the soil evaluation or test holes the health district requires. For a repair we locate the tank and lines and find out whether the problem is the tank, the outlet, the drain field or something upstream.

2. Free Written Estimate

You receive a written estimate that lists the tank, the drain field size, materials, excavation, permit fees and inspection coordination. Estimates are free, and the number is the number unless the ground or the county changes what has to be built.

3. Permits, Locates and Installation

We pull the septic permit through Central District Health in Ada County or Southwest District Health in Canyon County, call Dig Line 811 for utility locates, then excavate, set the tank, run the lines and build the drain field to the approved design. The inspector sees the open system before anything is covered.

4. Backfill, Grading and Follow-Up

After the inspection passes, we backfill, compact around the tank and grade the surface so water sheds away from the drain field instead of into it. You get the location of your tank and lids, plus straightforward advice on pumping intervals and what not to flush.

What Affects the Cost of Septic Installation and Repair in Boise

Septic pricing comes down to what the soil will accept and what the health district will approve. A standard gravity system on well-drained ground is the simplest and least expensive to build. Slow-draining clay, a high water table or a tight lot push the design toward larger drain fields, pressurized distribution or advanced treatment units, and those cost more.

Every septic job gets a free site visit and a written estimate before any work starts. We walk the property, review the soil evaluation and county requirements, and give you a clear number with the scope spelled out. That holds whether the property is in Boise, Eagle, Star or out in Canyon County near Nampa. Weighing your options on a new build? Read septic tank vs sewer.

  • System type: gravity, pressurized, mound, sand filter or aerobic treatment
  • Tank size and material, sized to bedrooms and daily flow
  • Drain field size, set by soil percolation and the health district's design rules
  • Soil conditions: clay, cobble, shallow bedrock or a high water table
  • Depth of the tank and lines, which must stay below the frost line
  • Health district permit, soil evaluation and inspection fees
  • Repair vs replacement: a new drain field on the same lot vs a whole new system
  • Restoration of lawn, landscaping, driveways and irrigation disturbed by the excavation

Common Questions / 06

Septic System Questions, Answered

Who issues septic permits in the Boise area?

In Ada County, including Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Star and Kuna, septic permits go through Central District Health. In Canyon County, including Nampa, Caldwell and Middleton, they go through Southwest District Health. Each district requires a permit before a new system is installed or an existing one is repaired or replaced, along with an inspection before the system is buried. We handle the application, the paperwork and the inspection scheduling as part of every job.

How do I know if my septic system is failing?

The usual signs are slow drains throughout the house, gurgling toilets, sewage odors near the tank or drain field, unusually green or soggy grass over the field, and sewage backing up into the lowest fixtures. Any one of these deserves a call. Read our post on the 5 signs your septic system is failing, then call (208) 919-4260 so we can diagnose the cause before it becomes a full replacement.

Can a failed drain field be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?

It depends on why it failed. A crushed line, a root intrusion or a clogged distribution box can often be repaired in place. A field that has been saturated for years and lost its ability to absorb water usually has to be replaced, sometimes in a new location on the lot approved by the health district. We tell you which case you are in after we open it up and look. Good habits help it last: see what you should never flush into a septic system.

How long does a septic installation take?

Most residential installations are dug, set, inspected and backfilled in two to four working days once the permit is in hand. Permit and soil evaluation timelines vary by health district and season, so the total calendar time from first call to finished system is usually a few weeks. Drain field replacements are often quicker. We give you a realistic schedule in the estimate and keep you posted.

Does Idaho's freeze and thaw cycle affect septic systems?

Yes. Tanks and lines are set below the frost line so they do not freeze, and proper grading and backfill keep surface water from pooling and refreezing over the drain field. Shallow lines, compacted snow over the field, or a system that runs very lightly in winter can all freeze up. Grading matters more than most people realize; see why proper grading matters for septic and drainage.

What if my septic system backs up at night or on a weekend?

Call (208) 919-4260. We offer 24 hour emergency service for septic backups, overflowing tanks and failed pumps across Boise and the Treasure Valley. Stop running water in the house, keep people and pets away from any surfacing sewage, and we will get a crew out to stabilize the situation. See our 24 hour emergency septic and sewer page for what to do while you wait.
