How a New Water Line Installation Works
A new water line is a once-in-decades job, and doing it right the first time is the whole point. Here is what to expect from Shamrock, whether it is a new build in Eagle, a replacement of an old galvanized line in Boise's North End, or a larger service for a commercial building in Nampa.
1. Call and Site Assessment
Call (208) 919-4260 and tell us about the project. We visit the property, confirm the location of the meter or tap and the entry point at the building, measure the run, and note what is in the path: driveways, sidewalks, trees, irrigation and other buried utilities. For replacements we look at the existing line's material and age so the new line solves the actual problem.
2. Design and Written Free Estimate
We size the line for the demand of the building, choose the pipe material and route, and plan the depth so the line sits below the frost line for its whole length. You get a free written estimate that breaks out excavation, pipe and fittings, the meter or tap connection, permits and inspection, and restoration. No surprises, and the plan is yours to keep.
3. Permits, Locates and Installation
We pull the permit with the City of Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell or the county with jurisdiction, and call Dig Line 811 so gas, power, sewer and communications are marked before we dig. The trench is cut to depth and bedded, then the line is laid and connected at the meter and the building. It is pressure tested and inspected before a single bucket of backfill goes in.
4. Backfill, Restoration and Follow Up
Backfill goes in compacted lifts so the trench holds up under lawns, driveways and walkways. We restore grade, topsoil, sod, gravel or concrete as agreed, flush the new line, check pressure at the fixtures, and put irrigation and any treatment equipment back in service. We leave the site clean and remain a phone call away.

What Affects the Cost of Water Line Installation in Boise
Water line installation is priced on the length and depth of the trench, what has to be dug through, what has to be put back, and the size and material of the pipe. A short run across an open lot during construction is the simplest case. A long run from a meter in the street, under a driveway and through cobble to an existing house, with a mature yard to restore afterward, is a bigger job.

Water Line Installation Questions, Answered
How deep should a water line be buried in Boise?
Below the frost line, for the entire run, with no shallow spots near the meter or the foundation. Treasure Valley winters bring hard freezes, and a line that rises too close to the surface at any point is the one that freezes and splits. We set the trench depth for the local frost depth and the requirements of the city or county that inspects the work, and we keep that depth consistent from the meter to the building.
Do I need a permit for a new water line in Boise or the Treasure Valley?
Yes. New water service lines in Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Star, Nampa, Caldwell and the surrounding areas require a permit and an inspection before backfill, and a new tap or meter involves the water utility as well. Work in the street or sidewalk usually needs a right-of-way permit too. We pull the permits, coordinate with the utility, call Dig Line 811 for locates and schedule the inspection as part of every installation.
Should I replace my old galvanized water line?
Many older Boise homes still have their original galvanized steel service line, and if yours does, replacement is worth planning. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside, which lowers pressure, discolors water and eventually leaks. Repairing one section usually leads to another failure nearby. How long does it take to install a new water line?
Many residential water line installations are finished in a day or two, including the pressure test, inspection and backfill. Longer runs, deep trenches, street cuts for a new tap, cobble and frozen ground add time, and commercial services vary with the size of the building. Coordinating the water trench with a new sewer line or other utilities during site prep is often the most efficient path. You get a realistic schedule with your written estimate.
How does Idaho soil affect a water line installation?
Treasure Valley soil ranges from heavy clay to loose sand to dense river cobble, sometimes on the same lot. Cobble slows trenching and must be kept out of the bedding around the pipe so it cannot wear through it over time. Clay holds water and needs careful compaction so the trench does not sink. Yes, and on new construction that is usually the smartest approach. One mobilization, one set of utility locates and one restoration pass costs less than two separate jobs, and we coordinate depths and routes so the lines never conflict.
