1. Call and Locate the Leak

On site we shut off the water at the meter if needed, then use electronic leak detection and nitrogen pinpointing to find the break without tearing up the whole yard. Once we know where the leak is and what the pipe is made of, we explain your options: a targeted section repair, or a full replacement if the line is old galvanized steel, polybutylene or has failed before. 3. The Repair
We call Dig Line 811 so gas, power, sewer and communications are marked, pull the City of Boise or county permit if the work requires one, and open the ground only where the leak is. The damaged section is cut out and replaced, or the full line is run new from the meter to the house. The line is pressure tested and, where required, inspected before we backfill.
4. Backfill, Restore and Follow Up
We backfill in compacted lifts so the trench does not settle, restore the grade, and put back sod, gravel, concrete or landscaping as agreed. We flush the line, check pressure at the fixtures and make sure the irrigation and any softener or filter are back in service. Then we walk the property with you before we leave.

How do I know if my water line is leaking underground?
The most common signs are a water bill that climbs with no change in use, a drop in pressure, a patch of lawn that stays green or soggy when the rest is dry, water in the crawl space or at the foundation, and the sound of running water when everything is off. Who is responsible for the water line from the meter to the house?
In Boise and the surrounding Treasure Valley cities, the homeowner is responsible for the service line from the meter to the house. The water utility maintains the meter and the main in the street. If the leak is on your side of the meter, the repair is yours. If it is at the meter or on the utility side, call your water provider first. We can help you tell which side the leak is on before anyone starts digging.
Can you repair just the broken section, or does the whole line have to be replaced?
It depends on the material and the history of the line. A single break in a copper or PEX line can usually be repaired in place. Old galvanized steel corrodes from the inside and tends to fail again near the last repair, and polybutylene becomes brittle with age, so on those materials a full replacement from the meter to the house is usually the better value. Do frozen pipes cause water line breaks in Idaho?
They can. Service lines in the Treasure Valley are buried below the frost line, but shallow sections near the meter, at the foundation, or where a line was installed too shallow years ago can freeze during a hard cold snap. Frozen soil also shifts, which can crack older pipes and joints. Many of the water line calls we get in late winter and early spring are lines that froze or were stressed by freeze-thaw cycles.
Do I need a permit to repair a water line in Boise?
Repairs to the service line on your property often require a plumbing permit and inspection from the City of Boise, Meridian, Nampa or the county, especially when a section is replaced or the connection at the meter is touched. Emergency repairs still get permitted; the paperwork just follows quickly behind the work.
